Richard L. Brown, MD, MPH

Rich has been on the faculty at the Department of
Family Medicine, University of Wisconsin School of Medicine
and Public Health, since 1990. He continues to teach and
conduct research. In the past, he has served as President of
the Association for Medical Education and Research Substance
Abuse (AMERSA) and as director of Project Mainstream, a five-year
project to enhance substance abuse education for faculty of 15
health professions.

Candace T. Peterson, Ph.D.

Past Jobs & Experience
Candace has worked in the substance abuse field since 1990, primarily in prevention, screening, and early intervention. She served as manager of substance abuse services for Dane County and was a senior program manager and principal investigator at the Pacific Institute for Research and Evaluation, one of the nation's leading independent, nonprofit health research and evaluation organizations. She also has worked on numerous projects as an independent consultant, trainer, and facilitator.

Laura A. Saunders, MSSW
Senior Manager of Site Operations
Primary Responsibilities
Hire, supervise, and train all health educators;
provide continuing education and clinical oversight
to WIPHL health educators statewide;
assist in the design and execution of WIPHL protocols.
Past Jobs & Experience
During her 17-year tenure with the Department of Family Medicine,
Laura has focused on all facets of research in substance abuse,
from the design of projects to publication. Previous projects focused
on the development of a two-item, conjoint screen for substance use
disorders (SUDs), innovative methods for administering motivationally
enhanced telephone treatment for SUDs and chronic pain. Laura was
the co-principal investigator for the NIDA-funded study, "Telephone
and Mail Intervention." In that position, she oversaw all clinical and
research staff as they administered motivationally enhanced
sessions to primary care patients with SUDs. Laura has advanced
training and expertise in motivational interviewing and focus group
administration.

Harold Gates, MSSW, CISW
Associate Director of Cultural Competence
Primary Responsibilities
Co-chair, Cultural Competency Committee;

(State Committee on Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse);

to WIPHL staff and clinics.

Harold is co-founder and co-owner of the Midwest Center for
Cultural Competence, LLC, a consultancy firm providing training
and presentations on cultural competence to corporations,
nonprofits, health care providers, and educational institutions.
His regional and national experience spans the areas of cultural
competence facilitation, counseling and employee assistance
programming, teaching and minority student services, and
multiracial crisis intervention and social work. A faculty member
at Madison Area Technical College since 1990, Harold
earned the MATC Foundation Distinguished Teacher Award
in 2002 for excellence in the classroom. Among his many
activities, he is vice president of the Association
of Multiethnic Americans (AMEA), a national umbrella advocacy
group based in Los Angeles that represents
the multiracial and transracial adoptive community.

Mia D. Croyle, MA
Manager of Access to SBIRT Services
Primary Responsibilities
Responsible for coordinating and facilitating all aspects of referral and access to treatment for those patients who screen positive for likely dependence.
Past Jobs & Experience
After earning her undergraduate degree in English and international service from Valparaiso University in Valparaiso, Indiana, Mia began working at a community mental health agency there while earning her master's degree in clinical mental health counseling. Her duties included running groups in the partial hospitalization program, managing a group home for adult men with severe and chronic mental illness, and serving on the emergency services team. After completing graduate school and moving to the Chicago area, she worked in the admissions department of a 210-bed inpatient behavioral health hospital, where she conducted clinical assessments for patients being admitted for inpatient psychiatric and chemical dependency treatment. While there, she also expanded upon her management experience working as shift supervisor and operations manager of her department.

Paul has been involved in applied research and
evaluation since 1973, when he began working as
evaluation coordinator for DePaul Hospital in Milwaukee.
Subsequently, he has worked in applied research and program
evaluation for the state of Wisconsin, the University of Wisconsin--
Madison, and as an independent consultant. He directed the
Center for Health Policy and Program Evaluation from 1986
until 2004 when CHPPE merged with and became the UW
Population Health Institute. He currently serves as deputy director
of UWPHI and principal investigator on many projects.
